 1990 ब‍िहार व‍िधानसभा चुनाव के बद मुख्‍यमंत्री के रूप में लालू प्रसाद यादव के चयन में शरद यादव ने जनता दल खेमा में महत्‍वपूर्ण भूम‍िका न‍िभाई थी। तब के प्रधानमंत्री व‍िश्‍वनाथ प्रताप सिंह रामसुंदर दास को सीएम बनाए जाने के पक्ष में थे। लालू ने शरद यादव को अपने खेमे में करके तीन वोट से राजद के अंदर रामसुंदर दास पर बढ़त बना ली थी।

 हालांक‍ि, यहीं से दोनों की दोस्‍ती टूटने की भी नींव पड़ने लगी थी। 1997 में लालू ने राष्‍ट्रीय जनता दल का गठन कर ल‍िया, जबक‍ि शरद यादव ने जनता दल (यूनाइटेड) की स्‍थापना की। यह बाद में जॉर्ज फर्नां‍ड‍िंस की समता पार्टी में म‍िल गई। आगे चलकर शरद और लालू लोकसभा चुनाव में भी एक-दूसरे के सामने आए। दोनों ने एक-एक बार एक-दूसरे को हराया।
